The trip is here! I’m currently at a Priority Pass lounge in the Vancouver airport awaiting my long flight to Guangzhou, China. From there, it’s off to Nepal! Admittedly, I’m a bit concerned. There’s a 40 minute delay, which puts me at 1 hour and 10 minutes to navigate the large Guangzhou airport and catch my connection. But that’s future Rick’s problem.
As for right now, I’m tired. Really tired. I had to pack for the trek last night, and since I’m the worst traveller in terms of last minute, I went to bed at 3 am. Packing, in itself, was an adventure equivalent to any mountainous task.
At the moment, Everest is being hit with lots of snow. The temperature has dropped to ridiculously cold numbers, resulting in a snowy slog of a cold trek. However, Kathmandu is about 20 degrees Celsius. So how do you pack for 19 days of adventure across many temperatures and environments? Also, we have porters on the trek who will carry 10 kg of luggage. So 22 lbs is all I get, not including what I’m willing to carry myself.
I’ll also say that I’m quite a minimalist- in life, packing, and stuff. But having never done a trek like this, I was bamboozled by what to carry (I have no idea if I used “bamboozled” correctly there…). Last night, I attempted to pare down what to bring. The above photo represents what got thrown into bags in the end. The whole process is a blur… so I’ll basically arrive in Kathmandu and sort it all out there. And at some point, I’ll add my list to this post. Since this won’t be the last trek of this magnitude, it’s probably a good thing to remember.
And if you’re reading this thinking, What should I pack for Everest Base Camp in December??… perhaps this list will help…
(to be updated)
Well Basecamp is on my list and I will do it so I’ll be interested to see this list! Good luck with the snow.
