Important Poo Etiquette

PooEtiquette-1This Christmas, my brother bought me a very important book. So much so, I feel compelled to share. For those who know me, you know that I hate public bathrooms. Even more, I dislike most people who use public bathrooms. The bathrooms, and in most cases, the people, are just gross. I can’t help but think how these people live in their own homes, because if a public bathroom is any indication, most homes would be disgusting urinary and fecal messes. Alas, I digress.

The workplace is an interesting environment. Work politics are always interesting. More interesting than that? The common workplace bathroom. In general, I prefer to use the single person bathroom in order to increase my chances of avoiding interaction with co-workers during these sacred times. Don’t get me wrong- the single person bathroom has its own fair share of concerns, including that heart-jumping feeling when someone tries to open the locked door instead of knocking, or that incredibly awkward moment when you leave the bathroom at the time someone is about to walk in, and your identity has been acknowledged.

Sometimes, the use of the public workplace bathroom is inevitable. And that’s where this book comes in: How to Poo at Work, by Mats and Enzo. The back cover reads: “Don’t let number 2 stop you from being number 1 on the job”. Now that’s some well-written stuff! I can only assume that this is what they should be teaching in school. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to learning a thing or two from this book, especially on how to deal with potentially awkward situations, like if the toilet gets clogged (OMG!). I’m also hoping it will legitimize many things that I already believe, such as not talking on your cell phone while standing at the urinal. This is a huge no-no in my eyes.

Speaking of eyes, I took a quick glance through the book and came across “The Golden Rules”. According to the book, the “bathrooms at the workplace are governed by six clear rules”:

  1. Never make eye contact with another person in the bathroom.
  2. Never start a conversation with another person in the bathroom.
  3. Create maximum distance between you and other persons present in the bathroom.
  4. Never express what you feel inside.
  5. Stay impassive, no matter what may have happened in the bathroom.
  6. Never make excuses to minimize attention to an event.

I fully expect this book to elaborate on these important points. But I’d like to express that I fully agree with number 3. When there’s a row of 5 empty stalls, and I decide to choose the first one, then why is it always the case that someone, without fail, chooses the second one!? Argh!!

I’m anticipating that How to Poo at Work will be quite a funny read. I support this kind of toilet humour.

Loving the Holiday Season

WhiteChristmas-1Christmas comes once a year… and for me, the holiday season flies by as quickly as it arrives. It’s definitely been a great few days with lots of catching up, video game battles, and lots of eats that go against my general dietary intake of the day-to-day. I don’t think I’ve had a legitimate serving of vegetables since I’ve arrived!

But these are the things I love about the holidays. I can step away from the hustle and bustle of life in Calgary for a few days and experience a bit of re-grounding.

So over this extremely busy week, I’m taking some time to relax, enjoy the company of my family and friends, and reflect on the year and year to come. And even though I left the crazy cold and wintry weather in Calgary, it’s nice to see a little snow on the ground at home.

Zoolights. Oooooh. Ahhhh.

Zoolights2012-2After almost 4 years, I finally went to see the Zoolights at the Calgary Zoo. In fact, after almost 4 years, it was my first time to the Calgary Zoo period. Isn’t that crazy? The lights were pretty. Very very pretty. And what better way to spend an evening than to walk around with some hot chocolate and admire pretty lights. Ooooh.

AHS: Almost Two Weeks Later…

Fancy building :)
Fancy building 🙂

So I’ve been asked a few times how the new job is going. “So far so good” is the usual answer I provide. As with any new position, there’s a learning curve. Admittedly, I feel like the curve is a bit steep, and I’m still foggy on what’s going on these days, but I have to remember to be patient- it’s been less than two weeks! Overall, I’m enjoying the position so far, and I think there will be many exciting things coming down the pipeline. Between trying to absorb all of the information coming my way, figure out HR and IT related issues, and navigate the shortest distance between my place and the Southport location, there’s been no shortage of new experiences!

Some notables:

1) I have a pretty incredible view! My 6th floor cubicle faces the north west; I can see Rockyview General Hospital, the C-Train, and a glimpse of the downtown skyline.

2) I get a fancy iPhone 5 for work. Whoohoo! If only I got some calls on it…

3) Between the upcoming laptop and my iPhone 5, I’ll be pretty mobile. Fun!

Oooh...
Oooh…

4) Office ergonomics are very important. My upper body has been hurting for a week and a half. I’ve been working here for a week and a half. I’ll be rectifying this situation ASAP.

5) The eatery on the main floor sells coffee for one dollar. One whole buck. I love this point.

6) Lunch time at my cubicle is a great time to write a quick blog post.

I Saw A Moose!

A moose!
A moose!

Originally, this post was going to be about trying cross-country skiing for the first time. I was going to write about UofC’s Intro to XC skiing program, the beauty of the Mount Shark area in the winter, learning the proper diagonal stride technique, and having a great day in the mountains.

But that story has been trumped by this:

I SAW A MOOSE!!

Why is this so important? Well, I guess it’s not that important. However, I’ve always wanted to see a moose in Alberta. I’ve been to the mountains so many times, and finally it happened. As we were driving back from cross-country skiing along Spray Lakes road, I spotted it in the distance. It was just standing there, on another road, just minding its business. “It’s a moose!”, I proclaimed. we circled back and admired it. Moose (or meese, as they are sometimes called) are amazing looking creatures, and they’re huge! It seemed aware that we were watching, and decided to walk in our direction. I think it was just curious. Although its proximity to the car was a bit alarming at times, we were able to snap some nice photos. I was so excited that I saw a moose. If it’s been unclear… I SAW A MOOSE!

To summarize, I loved cross country skiing, and can’t wait to go again :).

Cross country ski day. So much fun!
