Relaxing in Invermere

Watching the sun set from the resort

So here’s a super short post :). This past weekend I was in Invermere, BC, which is approximately a 2 hour and 40 minute drive from Calgary. My thoughts on Invermere? It was very nice and quaint with a scenic lake! It has a great cafe called the Blue Dog Cafe. Every small town needs a great cafe! It was clear upon arrival that if one likes boating on the lake, golfing, or skiing, Invermere is a great place to visit! But it’s also a great escape from the bustle of Calgary where one can relax and be among the mountains. I certainly enjoyed the latter. Home for the weekend was the Copper Point Resort, one of Invermere’s newest resorts. Thank you, Groupon, for the great deal and the special weekend :). And how was the resort? It was lovely, and the dining credit was much appreciated. Also included? Passes to the Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park. The hot springs pool was medium at best in my opinion, but appealing for those who like pools and hot springs! The End.

Thank You, Il Divo. You Were Amazing!

Il Divo’s latest album: Wicked Game

So last night was a great night of music. A few months ago, I bought tickets to see Il Divo in concert, featuring Nikki Yanofsky as the opening act. Last night was that long awaited concert. And let me just say: It was incredible. To start, Nikki Yanofsky sounded fantastic! I thought she was amazing when I heard her sing on TV at the Vancouver Olympics, but hearing her live made me realize that the girl can really sing! Amazingly. Such great Canadian talent.

Nikki Yanofsky. An amazing voice!

For those unaware, Il Divo is a very successful operatic pop vocal group. “Il Divo” means “divine male performer” in Italian, and the group of 4 was formed in 2004 by Simon Cowell. I think it’s really cool that all members are from different countries- French pop singer Sébastien Izambard, Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, American tenor David Miller, and Swiss tenor Urs Bühler – and their voices are  simply incredible. I can’t explain why I love them so much, other than to say that male operatic voices sound amazing, and I love pop music. Fuse those two together and I love what I feel when I listen to their music.

They sang several of their popular songs from past albums, and then many songs from their new album. “Wicked Game (Melanconia)” was awesome, and so was “Come What May (Te Amare)”. In thinking, everything was awesome. It was just an awesome awesome concert! As they concluded the encore with “Time to Say Goodbye (Con Te Partirò)”, I felt as though I had sat through something special, and with special company :). Thanks, Il Divo, for a wonderful concert!

Oh Guelph, How I’ve Missed You!

The Cannon

So I may have had a great adventure-filled weekend, but the real reason I’m back in town is for the Statistical Society of Canada’s (SSC) annual meeting. That’s right- a congregation of statisticians for three days of utter nerdery. Over time, I’ve moved away from the hard-core statistical theory and into data management and statistical programming, but every now and then I like to be reminded that I was once skilled in the area. I have never attended an SSC meeting, but what made this year’s conference very appealing is that it is occurring at my alma mater, the University of Guelph. It’s great to see former professors and friends that I haven’t seen in a long while!
Dr. Steph. Yay Statistical Society!

In the atrium, working hard on blogging… um… I mean statistical things!

The UofG will always be a special place. I spent 7 years here completing both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in statistics. I’ve walked through the University Centre countless times and crossed Branion Plaza and the cannon to get to my office in the MacNaughton building.  I felt quite nostalgic walking around campus today. It’s not that I would want to transplant my life back to Guelph, but there are so many great memories of this place. And the campus isn’t the same as it was back then. Many new or renovated buildings like Alexander Hall are now present, but the sentiments of the campus still run deep. There were many good times here. Oh Guelph… how I’ve missed you so… 🙂

The evening ended with an alumni dinner event, where it was great to chat with former professors and other past students. In addition to a great night of drinks and mingling, I finally had a famed Bob’s Dog! When I was a student, I knew that the hot dog vendor outside of the Bullring, Bob’s Dogs, was the place to go. I learned that everyone must try a Bob’s Dog at some point. Believe it or not, after 7 or so years studying at Guelph, I never had a sausage from Bob’s Dogs. Thankfully, Dr. Gary Umphrey arranged for Bob to provide the food, and I couldn’t be happier. I finally had a Bob’s Dog, and it was incredibly delicious! So much so, I had two. And I was so impressed that I had to have my photo taken with Bob himself! Another highlight of the night: seeing my former professor Dr. J.J. Hubert. I hadn’t seen him in ages, and both Dr. Hubert and Dr. Umphrey are responsible for introducing me to the topic of statistics when I was a young and eager undergraduate student 10 years ago. My career wouldn’t have been the same without their influence and support. Even though I didn’t manage to get a photo with them, I’ll always have the memories of this evening :). What a great way to start the SSC.

Bob of Bob’s Dogs. Finally a photo!
Nerds unite 🙂

I Leave An Angry Man

I have a Costco membership! Yay?

So yesterday, I purchased a Costco membership. That’s right… I’ve joined the ranks of many others who love things in bulk, value those crazy discounts, and love free samples.
But here’s the thing about Costco. Or Walmart. Or Superstore. Or Ikea.

This is why I leave an angry man. Too many people. Too much stuff.

I love these stores, and very much appreciate the affordable prices. I usually enter them all smiles! I’m cheery, ready to do some shopping and come out with everything I wanted or needed. But then parking is a headache. The stores are zoos. People don’t seem to remember that I’m not invisible when they decide to ram their carts into me. I remember why I hate materialism and our consumeristic society while acknowledging that I’m part of it. And I could write a novel in the same amount of time spent waiting in line to pay for merchandise. In the end, I usually don’t end up buying what I wanted and I leave an angry man.
With that said, I have high hopes for my Costco membership, especially after seeing the amazing prices they have on ground turkey and pork tenderloin. 🙂
