Last Friday I attended a work retreat for members of the division. I won’t discuss work here, but it was held at Heritage Park in the south. I’ve always wanted to go to Heritage Park, though admittedly, I never knew what was there. It’s quite the historical village, complete with a dentist, bakery, church, railway, and Calgary’s first hospital! What was equally impressive were the views! From different vantage points, you had a clear view of the Calgary skyline, and a view of the mountains in the distance over the Glemnore Reservoir. And it was such a gorgeous day for mid-October! I think it’d be nice to revisit the park one day when things are in full swing :).

AHS: Almost Two Weeks Later…

So I’ve been asked a few times how the new job is going. “So far so good” is the usual answer I provide. As with any new position, there’s a learning curve. Admittedly, I feel like the curve is a bit steep, and I’m still foggy on what’s going on these days, but I have to remember to be patient- it’s been less than two weeks! Overall, I’m enjoying the position so far, and I think there will be many exciting things coming down the pipeline. Between trying to absorb all of the information coming my way, figure out HR and IT related issues, and navigate the shortest distance between my place and the Southport location, there’s been no shortage of new experiences!

Some notables:
1) I have a pretty incredible view! My 6th floor cubicle faces the north west; I can see Rockyview General Hospital, the C-Train, and a glimpse of the downtown skyline.
2) I get a fancy iPhone 5 for work. Whoohoo! If only I got some calls on it…
3) Between the upcoming laptop and my iPhone 5, I’ll be pretty mobile. Fun!

4) Office ergonomics are very important. My upper body has been hurting for a week and a half. I’ve been working here for a week and a half. I’ll be rectifying this situation ASAP.
5) The eatery on the main floor sells coffee for one dollar. One whole buck. I love this point.

6) Lunch time at my cubicle is a great time to write a quick blog post.

Wandering Beautiful Halifax

Today I touched down in Halifax. My job is awesome in that it allows me to travel across the country every now and again to discuss drug studies (www.cnodes.ca). So I’m here in this great seaside city for a meeting and workshop tomorrow. It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to wander a new city, so once I checked into the Marriott Harbourfront, I was off to explore.

I grabbed myself a coffee from Starbucks and then headed to the Halifax Citadel, onward to the Public Gardens, admired the Dalhousie campus (I love wandering university campuses!), bought apples at the Farmer’s Market and then walked along the Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk.

It was a lot of walking, but the weather was pleasant and the air had a scent of the ocean. I miss the ocean. A lot. I also realized that while I like to visit and wander cities on my own, it’s a much more enjoyable experience with someone. When my co-worker arrived, I met up with her and we wandered around for a bit more, chatting and laughing about this, that and the other.

We retired early since we were both exhausted and had some reading to do for work. But instead of reading, I indulged in room service while watching I Robot on TV. It seemed much more exciting than reading papers for the workshop entitled “Minimizing Confounding Bias in Observational Studies: Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting (IPTW).”
